The Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook has a strong commitment to improving the quality of life through research and education in chemistry. Our goal is to contribute significantly to basic and applied knowledge in chemistry, with emphasis on health, environment and energy, while offering excellent education programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. In particular, we want to be able to respond to the needs of society, to anticipate future changes in chemical research, and to enrich students' perspectives. Thus, the emphasis is on the principles of theory and practice, on creative thinking, and on the frontiers of chemistry, especially in materials chemistry and the life sciences. Courses, colloquia, seminars, individual research, and faculty-student interactions are at the core of this program, giving students both depth and breadth of knowledge in these areas.

The strong academic program in our department is a reflection of our high-caliber faculty, many of whom have attained international recognition. With more than $6 million in external funding and state-of-the-art facilities, the Department of Chemistry at Stony Brook offers an outstanding environment for training the chemists of the future.

Since the first Ph.D. was granted by the department in 1966, we have proudly launched more than 450 Ph.D. and 230 Master's degree graduates into successful careers in industrial research and management, teaching, and basic research in academic and government laboratories. We are looking to enhance our already distinguished reputation and invite you to join us in fulfilling our ambitions.
