Guidelines for the Preparation of Theses/Dissertations

ATTENTION:  

Starting in Spring 2008, students will be required to submit their thesis/dissertation electronically.  No paper submissions will be accepted.

Effective Thursday, November 1, 2007 students will no longer pay their thesis/dissertation fee at the Gradaute School.  The fee will be charged to students' accounts after submission of the thesis/dissertation to the Graduate School.  We will provide students with futher information upon submission.

Please reveiw and follow the requirements set forth in the Guidelines below.  (NOTE: Electronic theses/dissertations are NOT to be e-mailed). 

We strongly encourage students to bring along their laptop and an extra disc, in case corrections are needed. 

All SINC sites on campus are equipped with Adobe in order for students to convert their thesis/dissertation files to pdf.  The SINC sites can also provide help with any technical issues students may encounter when preparing their thesis/dissertation.

Exit Packet of Forms
Note:  All forms must be filled out in ink or typed, and must contain original signatures.  Do NOT scan the forms onto the thesis/dissertation disc.  We cannot accept scanned versions of these forms, either as scans on a disc or scans that have been printed out.

Masters Thesis Exit Packet
The Masters Exit Packet consists of two forms, and both are required  for all Masters Thesis submissions:

    1. Contact Information Sheet
    2. Stony Brook University Licensing Form

These forms are submitted along with your thesis to the Graduate School.

Doctoral Dissertation Exit Packet
The Doctoral Exit Packet consists of four forms, and all four are required for all Doctoral Dissertation submissions:

    1. Contact Information Sheet
    2. Stony Brook University Licensing Form
    3. Survey of Earned Doctorates
    4. ProQuest/UMI Microfilm Agreement Form

You will only need to print out and complete the following forms for the ProQuest/UMI form:  

• For the publishing options form (p. 3), select which publishing option you prefer.
• All doctoral students must complete the Dissertation Submission Form (p. 4).  For subject categories, please refer to the subject categories list in Guide 2.
• Copyright Registration form (p. 5) – this form is only required for doctoral students who choose to copyright their dissertation.  Please see the Guidelines for further information regarding what is needed for doctoral students who choose to copyright.
• The Author Discount Offer form is an optional form for doctoral students who wish to order personal copies through ProQuest/UMI.
• To gain permission from authors of journal articles you are reproducing for your dissertation, please use the template found in Guide 6.

These forms are submitted along with your dissertation to the Graduate School.
